How to Sidechain in Fruity loops
-
Sidechaining is a very powerfull technic to improve sound dynamics of a track. So if you had no idea what is was before, its a lucky production day for you!
After learning from the tutorial it will sound kinda like this:
Example of what will be made (1083)
Â
Hasn´t got the “WOW feeling” to it tho, but the techniques used for this will be priceless!
Sidechaining is most commonly used to chain the kick too the bass, which means that when the kick hits - the bass goes down in volume. Why shall you use this? Well for starters you will get a nice “grooove” feeling to any track if applied correctly.
And while playing arounds with it you can get results such as these that ive produced below:
Random compilation of Sidechained melodies (684)
Â
Lets get started!Â
Step 1
Start by opening a new FL session
Now change the default kick to any basskick you want for way better results, tho ive choosen to use the default one.
Apply FX mixchannel 1 to the kick, add a Fruity Peak Controller. The basskick is used later on as a “rythm trigger”, u´ll see. (Be sure to unselect the Mute button to hear the kick/effects)Â
Â
Step 2
Now add the synthesizer Sytrus and navigate your way to Cerbera Saw (under bass)
Now add FX mixchannel 2 to the sytrus, and here we need to add a compressor of any kind, ivé used Fruity MultiBand Compressor with default settings.Â
Â
Right click the Gain knobb, far left, and push “Link to controller”. Navigate your way down abit and click on “Internal controllers”, here you select “Peak” and then we Accept.Â
And in the 3rd column click like above but BE SURE to add inverted or it will sound like Shit!Â
Step 3
Now back to the basskick, navigate you way to the Fruity Peak Controller FX interface and use the settings as shown below!Â
Â
Another good way is to instead of linking the compressors Gain knobb,  you link the kick to the cerbera saw volume in the mixer. And wallaaa now you know how to  Sidechain in fruity loops!Â
Well it really doesnt end there, Â you can link any knobb in multiband compressor to the Peak controller, maybe do it reverse, use different synths, effects, compressors, etc. In other words, endless link-age-ing! Good luck and i hope this tutorial was useful!Â

Hi there,
Very usefull, although i’m still wondering how to get the sidechain effect working fully. Because the peak controller looks for peaks instead of drops. And i dont want my volume to be louder when my kick kicks, i want it to press my synth away. In my logic that is exactly the opposite of this method Or am i wrong?

Hey mate,I’m an electronic producer from Salt Lake City, UT. USA.
After you link your compressor or other effect you have chosen, you MUST “invert” it after
you select your internal controller. In the same box (Link to controller box) Simply click on the
drop down box below the Internal controller option “on the remote settings box” and select invert.
That may have been one of your problems, also, on the Fruity Peak, you can adjust the Volumes of
your base so your kick isnt drowned out.
